April 25, 2009 – Foxhunt Held in Cleveland County

The fox team this time was June Melvin, WA4JNJ, Jane Hamrick, K4JPH and Susan Melvin, K4ZXN.  The ladies picked a really nice spot to hide.  Of course, it was complete with Bathroom and a Birdseye view of the transmitter hunters.  The weather was beautiful for the foxhunt!  The hiding spot was the Spangler Library in Lawndale/Piedmont School.  The ladies enjoyed sitting on the benches in front of the library - they enjoyed breakfast, talking and watching the foxhunters as they drove by on Hwy 182. The first team to find us was LeeJay Mauney, KI4RAK and his son AJ, who I think were surprised when they rounded the corner to find us up on top of the hill.   2nd team to find us was the team that consisted of Ben Melvin, KM4C, Michael Ledford, KI4JCV and Ken Ledford, AG4EI.  Next was Neal Hodges, W4JNH and fourth was Joel Farmer, AI4JT.  Unfortunately we had to relocate around Noon to allow room for a birthday party being held at the Library in Lawndale.  We didn’t move too far, just to the a few hundred feet.  We were still within the confines of the Piedmont School area.  Susan Melvin, K4ZXN and Michael Ledford, KI4JCV enjoyed a nice stroll around the Park’s walking track while waiting for the other teams to find the fox.  The fifth team to find the fox was George Poteat, K4GLP with Sherland Poteat, KF4TLL and “Pop” Voight, W4HQF.  Sixth was Danny Gilliland KG4ZJJ and Scott Poteat, KG4TWS.  Seventh was Cy Rowe, K1CY and Pat Rowe, N4DOX.    Below are some of the photos of this event.  Be sure to join us the next time.  No foxhunt has been scheduled as of publication of this newsletter.

2009 Catawba Valley Hamfest – Morganton, NC

The Shelby Amateur Radio Club was well represented at this year’s Catawba Valley Hamfest in Morganton.  I wish I could name all that I saw but I would be sure to leave someone out and I don’t want to do that.  Many of our friends from Cleveland County and Gaston County were in attendance.  Dick Bridges, K4BRE (Former member) and Scott Weaver, KI4FAU won some hamfest bucks.  Greg Horne, WA4YBP won an Alinco HT!  Thanks go to Gary Tessener, KF4PMD for getting out early and setting up to sell tickets and to all those who helped.  Ben Melvin, KM4C EC for Cleveland County was also there selling the ARES Raffle tickets for the Yaesu 857D.  If you haven’t bought yours yet, be sure to get to the club meeting and buy some.  This is the only prize that members of SARC are eligible to buy tickets for and to win!   Bill Bridges, N4WH was on the grounds roaming around with his camera.

2009 TRIATHLON

Shelby Amateur Radio Club, ARES of Cleveland County with the help of Gaston County ARES provided communication support to the City of KM on May 30, 2009 for the 10th Annual Over the Mountain Triathlon.  It is estimated by the ARRL Public Service Activity Report that the cost of this free public service would be close to $14,000 when factoring in the cost per person/per hour and equipment.—Photos by Bill Bridges, N4WH—Ben Melvin, KM4C—Susan Melvin, K4ZXN and Cy Rowe, K1CY.—not pictured Barney Huddleston, KG4GMI, Pop Voight, W4HQF, Sherland Poteat, KF4TLL, Scott Poteat, KG4TWS, Danny Gilliland, KG4ZJJ, June Melvin, WA4JNJ and Gaye McQueeney, N1XBN.

FEMA EARTHQUAKE DRILL

ARES of Cleveland County/Shelby Amateur Radio Club members participated in a FEMA/NCEM Drill on June 23rd and 24th at the Cleveland County EOC.  The drill simulated an earthquake hitting the Buncombe County area.  During the Drill link was made with the State EOC using HF Radio.  The antenna, a G5RV was installed the Friday before by Ben Melvin, Todd Vickery, Chip Workman, Neal Hodges, Bill Bridges and some help from Dewey Cook.

This drill overlapped with an interoperability drill that tested communications state-wide.  Links were established with each major position through the use of HF radio and VHF Radio.  VHF communication was enhanced by using repeaters in the PCRN Network of repeaters.

Many thanks go out to those who helped by volunteering man power to get the antenna up and also for manning the radios during the drill.  The drill on Tuesday started at 7 AM and ended around 7:30 PM and on Wednesday ending around Noon.  This drill was very important to ARES as it showed FEMA and NC Emergency Management that truly “When All Else Fails, Amateur Radio Works!

2009 ARRL FIELD DAY

JUNE 27TH AND 28TH

<CASAR PARK, CASAR, NC>  The group operated on Solar Power for a little while, there was a demonstration of ATV with Doc Skinner, K4GBS, a training/recruitment session with the Red Cross ECRV (Emergency Communications Response Vehicle) with Joe Getlein, W1FAI and lots of visitors, young and old!   The wives contributed lots of sweet goodies to the cause and some other home cooked goodies. The GOTA station served its purpose and allowed young folks, new hams and inactive hams a chance to operate the radio some. The local press stopped by to interview participants and to take photographs. Local politicians who were invited stopped by to take in the activities along with local area firefighters, law enforcement and emergency management folks. Many thanks go to those that worked very hard getting the place set up, those that stayed the full time and those that coached the GOTA Station. So many hours go into planning something of this magnitude and I as a participant cannot thank those that made this years field day a success enough.

THANKS TO ROBBY HAMRICK, WA4RH AND BEN MELVIN, KM4C FOR ADDITIONAL PHOTOS DURING FIELD DAY
